The importance of Comms Room monitoring

Posted 9 years ago

Your comms room, or server room, is a vital part of your business operations. We like to think of it as the brain as it is where your ICT systems reside.

It is therefore extremely important to maintain an ideal environment inside your comms room. Variations in conditions can have an adverse effect on the equipment, which can in turn affect your business operations. This is where comms room monitoring solutions can help. It is of critical importance that you maintain a suitable temperature in your server room to avoid your equipment overheating.

Maintaining the temperature of your comms room
Environmental factors like humidity and temperature can have a negative effect on the equipment in your comms room. With this in mind, it is vitally important that you are aware of the conditions within your comms room and that you are maintaining an optimal environment for your servers and networking equipment.

Comms room monitoring solution
Monitoring multiple distributed communications rooms can be both expensive and time consuming, however it is critical to your business operations. Here at ITM, we have a wire-free and cost effective solution that provides real time monitoring.

The solution we recommend is a wire-free monitoring solution for communications rooms that operates in real time, using active RFID-powered sensors. These sensors relay critical information (such as temperature and humidity levels) to the server room manager, so they can make strategically sound decisions about power, cooling and asset life.

This innovative communications room monitoring solution is much more affordable and practical than wired solutions and allows you to effectively maintain the optimal environmental conditions for your equipment. In addition to providing a best in class monitoring solution ITM also offers managed equipment room services where we can manage your entire comms room infrastructure.

The RF Code solution will allow you to gain better control over your server room environment.

How does it work?
The RF Code utilises sensor tags encoded with active RFID radio transmissions at 344MHz to broadcast information about the environment to a M240 reader. The transmissions are processed in real-time, allowing data centre managers to access up-to-the-minute information about the conditions of their facility, along with any environmental changes.

The RF Code communications room monitoring solution is designed for indoor use and is ideal for small network or IT closets. The M240 has an intended read range of 12-15 feet and for coverage zones up to 700 square feet. It is fully encrypted allowing for safe data transmissions, with all operational settings being password protected and fully secure.

Key benefits of RF Code
The comms room monitoring solution utilises best in class technology, key benefits include:

  • Real time reporting of temperature, humidity and other environmental data
  • Alerts for unauthorised access
  • Centralised control of multiple comms rooms
  • Can be upgraded to include asset tracking and management
  •
